The Challenge
Unicef contracted us to shoot a documentary about its Youth Advocate Makhtoum Abdalla. Makthoum & his family live in an IDP camp in Darfur. Despite his circumstances in Otash Camp where there’s no water or electricity, he has managed to overcome and excel in his education achieving the highest of grades, 275 out of 280.
The Solution
With this documentary we wanted to document the story of the 16 year old who dreams of getting into Colombia University. We developed the script before flying to Darfur to shoot the documentary.
The Results
The documentary touched my people, especially Western media. TED Talks saw the documentary, and Makhtoum was invited as a speaker on one of their episodes about education. This episode was also filmed by us during the nationwide imposed internet blackout by the Coup. TEDs online platform has 21.6 million subscribers.
